1.0 out of 5 stars awful product, September 8, 2012
This review is from: LG SP520 Smart TV Upgrader Built-In WiFi - Black (Electronics)
I bought this product on sale at a local Fry's for 29.99. Even with the wireless router in the same room with the product with no security I could not get a wireless connection. A software "upgrade" that could not be declined nor reverted removed the Amazon video app -- my primary reason for purchasing the device. Were it not for the 40 mile roundtrip and 15% restocking fee I would be returning this device.

I tried to submit a review on the lg website more than one week ago and lg apparently has declined to publish as there are still 0 reviews of the product over there.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great little streaming device! Great price, September 23, 2012
This review is from: LG SP520 Smart TV Upgrader Built-In WiFi - Black (Electronics)
Like most people here, I bought this at Fry's for $29.99, cheapest streaming, media player device you could find anywhere. First of all, for those that gave this one star, it's not fair for LG. No device is perfect and so is this one, it can't satisfy all of our needs. I have to agree that one major flaw is that the wifi reception of this device sucks and it doesn't remember my password setting! Quite a few times, when I turned it on, I had to reenter the password. Now are the good parts: the remote control feel nice the your hand, not too small, not too big, ergonomic and has just enough buttons. And so is the content apps, it has Netflix, Hulu Plus, Vudu, CinemaNow, Pandora, YouTube (YES, YouTube is still there), even Google Map! Amazon is on the cover of the box but I don't know why it's not there any more :( The menu, user interface is clean, especially with Netflix, it's just exactly like on Roku (and yes, it does have closed captioning feature, unlike most of the streaming... 1.0 out of 5 stars Wifi range is useless., September 14, 2012
This review is from: LG SP520 Smart TV Upgrader Built-In WiFi - Black (Electronics)
Purchased this unit hoping to give it as a gift to someone. After purchasing the unit I took it home and set it up to confirm it worked and update the firmware and set it up. First thing I noticed was the total lack of wifi reception with the router located in the next room. I ran a wired connection and hoped that an update would fix this, and it did not. I set the LG SP520 literally next to the router and had full wifi reception, however at a mere 10ft away in the same room with an unobstructed line of sight to the router the reception dropped to 1 bar. Any further then 10-12ft or a wall in the way and a wifi connection can't be established. This is running the latest updates and firmware as of Sept. 14th.

Once I gave up on using wifi I decided I'd explore the functionality and ease of use of the device. Frankly, it sucks. To utilize netflix you have to access the 'Premium' content icon, select netflix then choose either the full flavor or child friendly version of... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent cable for the price, January 1, 2011

This review is from: AmazonBasics High-Speed HDMI Cable (6.5 Feet/2.0 Meters) - Supports Ethernet, 3D, and Audio Return [Newest Standard] (Electronics)
Before I purchased this HDMI cable for my Roku XDS I shopped around first at nearby Walmart and Best Buy, and read some reviews for this product. I'm a retired electrical engineer and do not believe on going overboard, spending more than adequate to get a good result on audio and video component. There are cables in the market that are priced too high to get the money out of those people who are willing to pay the price. Those people always believed that if the price is high, the product must be very good. For digital signal transmission, this HDMI cable is more than adequate. My video and audio were not degraded, and I did not notice any lost of clarity either on video or audio signal.

4.0 out of 5 stars A bit difficult to maneuver, November 1, 2010

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program ( What's this?)
I hooked this braided HDMI cable between my HDTV and my computer to stream video from the internet to my HDTV. The picture is clear and the sound quality is very good. I don't see any difference while using this cable from computer to HDTV than I do when watching TV directly from my satellite box. The only problem I have with this cable is that it is very thick due to the braiding, which makes it hard to turn. I need to plug it into one side of my HDTV, loop it around the back of the TV and bring it out on the other side where I place my computer out of tripping range. The thickness of the cable makes it hard to loop around and it's heavier than the other cables I have. This cable would probably be best for professional use where there might be heavy usage and plugging and unplugging of the cord. It will probably stand the test of time and constant movement easier than the regular smooth vinyl cables. But, for normal home use, the vinyl cables are easier to handle... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars A Basic Cable at a Good Price, November 1, 2010

This is the HDMI cable to get right now: an HDMI 1.4 cable at a good price.

HDMI 1.4

HDMI 1.4 is the latest standard (as of November 2010 at least). It is backward compatible with other HDMI gear (mine all are HDMI 1.3 compliant). And it will be more useful to you if your TV supports HDMI 1.4 networking. I was not able to test the Ethernet networking capability of this cable, but I think the idea behind it is a good one.

For my current home entertainment setup, I had to set up separate Internet connections on my TV, set top box, Blu-Ray player, and WD TV LIVE (HTPC). It would have been a lot easier if I could have just set up my TV's internet connection, and allow all of my components to share it. That's what HDMI 1.4 promises to let you do--as long as all of your hardware, including the cables, supports it. This cable will support that functionality; it's more "future-proof" than the HDMI 1.3 cables I have been using.

This review is from: Western Digital WD TV Live Streaming Media Player Wi-Fi 1080p AVI Xvid MKV MOV FLV MP4 MPEG (Electronics)
I recently decided to start a little weekend project of completely digitizing my 200+ home DVD collection. I wont get into any arguments over the legal ramifications of this type of project, but rest assured every digital movie in my collection is a straight rip of a physical DVD I own. That being said, I really needed a good option to actually "deliver" these movies to my HD TV in my living room. I have an Xbox 360 but that just didnt seem to be making the cut. So I started researching these fancy smart set-top boxes.

At first I was convinced the Roku XS 2 was the way to go - but I started reading more and more about its lack of specific filetype support (i.e. MKV, M4V, AVI to name a few). That and it really didnt do network streaming/sharing well (if at all). I saw the WD TV Live HUB with 1TB harddrive for 199 and thought that was just a little too steep for my price range (the Roku is 99 afterall). Then I somehow accidentally found this device on Amazon. The price... Read more

    ---------------UPDATE 5/25/2012-------------------
There's been a lot of changes since writing this review but just this week, WD updated the youtube leanback app and made a ton of improvements!. Now I can play my new videos from my subscriptions playlist :) There's also more data provided about each video and a sleek ui overhaul. You can also control the app through your iphone/android device (haven't tested this yet). Nice job WD! Loving this so much now!
    --------------- /Update----------------------------

I want to start by letting you all know that I'm very picky about my electronics and I'm not easily satisfied nowadays, so I always play with several products before sticking with one. I've gone through the wdtv live plus (grey model with small remote), sony smp-n100, and the apple tv 2 before trying out this device (also used various BD players, gaming consoles for netflix/youtube streaming). I must say that this unit takes the cake in terms of what you get... Read more

I got this media player elsewhere locally, before Amazon dropped their price. Anyway, the GUI is fine. It's easily navigable, not cluttered at all, presented in a beautiful package, and certainly easy to read. All pluses there. The first videos I attempted to play were 720p mkv files over wireless network (on a 1TB HDD connected to my computer in the basement via USB). After taking a few seconds to gather the first few pictures from the USB--> wireless connected storage device, the WDTV Live streamed the videos seamlessly! I even paused one for like 8 minutes while making dinner, and it resumed with no noticeable glitches, artifacts, or rendering/buffering. The second (and only other) file type I attempted to play was a 1080p TS file I had recorded from my cable box. This took a little bit longer between hitting play and seeing video on the screen, but time was minimal. I want to say no more than 4 or 5 seconds. Again, it had to pull the video from the HDD to the computer via USB, and... Read more
