4.0 out of 5 stars Lacks N-networking and usb port - Updated 12/21/10, November 9, 2009

First let me say I own a Roku and LOVE it! NetFlix and Roku are a marriage made in heaven as far as I'm concerned, and they are saving me tons of money and treks to the video store. The picture, ease of use, wireless capabilities, quality of video content... everything is great!

But as a consumer it's important to understand the differences between the 3 Roku offerings so you can make an informed decision on your purchase. It does seem odd that Roku has simply not put out one device at one price for everyone with all the bells and whistles, but for now, you have to choose one... based upon your needs and budget.

THE DIFFERENCES IN ROKU PLAYERS:
Roku HD Player is capable of wired or wireless hook-up, but not at the fastest speed available from a 'N' wireless network. HD content streams to this device... Read more

The Roku HD-XR is fantastic. Even if you only have Wirless-G, what you see on screen still looks like a million bucks, and is truly HD, even if you have na HD TV or not. It's only actually 720P, and not 1080p, but unless you're using a large TV over 32", you'd never even notice anyway. Regardless, it still looks fantastic.

Before I gush over the features, however, I MUST tell you about the experience I had with getting it connected:

First, it took less than 5 minutes to pull it out of the box to watching movies on NetFlix. It's astonishingly no-brainer, and I'm dead serious when I say that. If you also have an internet-connected wireless laptop sitting in your lap during setup, drop the out-of-the-box-to-watching-movies time to 3 minutes.

Now this is where this little device knocked my socks off: I'm a computer network engineer, and I do not have a simple wireless internet setup in my house. I have a very complex enterprise network set up,... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars A great new toy, November 19, 2009

I am really enjoying my new Roku XR. The setup was extremely easy and intuitive. I am running the ROKU XR wirelessly off of an N-Router (Trendnet 633) located on the other side of the house. I am getting "4 dots and HD" (best quality) with no interuptions in play.

My only complaint is that I have to go to Netflix and enter movies I want to watch on the Netflix Instant Queue before the Roku XR will play the movie. So basically, I have to go to my computer, find my TV shows or movies, enter them into the Instant Queue on the computer then goto the ROKU and my selections will be available to watch. I really wish I could scan for movies and shows thru the ROKU.

Other than that, the setup and playback quality is excellent using HDMI. Recommended :)

UPDATE 6/10/10 : ROKU and Netflix have fixed the annoying need to select your movies on your computer and then go to the ROKU to see your queue. Now you can search for movies on Netflix from inside the... Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars More for Media Player - Poor for Online content, April 7, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase( What's this?)
First this is awesome player with huge I TB capacity.
You can dump all your personal photos, videos, movies, songs and watch/listen at a click of button. Included remote (mini keyboard) is good but it will take some time before to get used.

I tried with MKV, JPG, AVI, BMP, MP3 formats and it works well.

Sometimes it is struck but that is fine we can't expect powerful processor for less than $200. Not yet tried with Netflix.
But for web browser it is like basic only you can't read text as letters are very small.

PROS:
1. 1 TB hard disk
2. Runs almost all formats with Ease
3. Bearable starting and running speed
4. Can run Music and photos simultaneously
5. Include WIFI USB which is good if you are setting home network.
6. Included HDMI cable
7. Joystick (Player Control Pad) is awesome when you are watching YouTube or searching.
8. Can run for older TV's with composite AV cables
9. Pretty fast when... Read more

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice Hardware Let Down By Bad Software, May 2, 2011

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program ( What's this?)
[Update: December 2011 IOmega pushed out a software update that returned Netflix to useable and added VUDU support. I should also apologize; I had stated the previous update broke my HDMI connection, turns out it was just a loose connector. So I am now returning this to 3 stars.]

I was happy to take delivery of this product. I have my old HDTV relegated to basement duty and this media player promised, and delivered on the amount of content I could deliver to it. Specifically, I needed a Netflix player, and a player capable of handling the high definition over the air recordings hosted on my Linux MythTV server (and delivered via the UPnP AV protocol). And, ideally do so without too much wasted standby power.

So, yes, the hardware has shown itself quite capable of playing 1080i and 720p MPEG2 video streams, and put out Dolby Digital over its TOSLink optical port. And it has a Netflix player. In addition, the recent software update brought support for VUDU with... Read more

This seemed like more than the WD Live as it has a Browser, that was the reason for my ordering it, along with a cool, full keyboard remote.
Sadly the Browser is useless, slow and quirky and really serves little purpose. I was also hoping that one could assign a VPN to the box allowing access to streaming media from the UK. Which it doesn't.
It did pick up my network, but does not recognize a USB hub, so you are limited to what you can connect to the 3 USB ports.
My reasons for giving it 2 stars, rather than 1, are it actually comes with a wireless dongle along with an HDMI cable. Many other manufacturers do not include this.
It will not playback BluRay files, again a drawback. But others seemed to stream over my network without any hiccups.
There is so little information about this product, even on iomega's website, which is why I ordered it in the hope it would work with my set-up.
So in conclusion, it's basically the same as a WD Live, it has Netlfix,... Read more

It's not much to look at coming out of the box, but boy, does the O!Play pack a wallop! It's an outstanding first effort from Taiwan-based Asus, a company known more for Eee Netbook and notebook computers than home entertainment devices. With Asus being a newcomer to the media player field and my having tested so many bad players, I was a bit hesitant to order the O!Play, but now I'm a believer. With its exhaustive list of supported video codecs and network connectivity, it is nearly the perfect player, capable of playing everything from VCD to DVD to Blu-ray/HD DVD rips. Most notably, it supports RMVB, an important feature to fans of Asian shows and one that most of the major-brand players lack, including the otherwise superb... Read more

asus box
Speaking as someone who really does own this device - this thing rules. It streams easily and quickly from my xp box in my basement over cat5 cable. (or the technologically inept may just hook a USB or esata hard drive direct)

It plays everything so far including ISO (dvd image) files, video_ts rips from dvds (I know someone will ask these questions) but I did it already and it works great.

Other files, MKV, xvid, divx, whatever. PERFECT. 1080P, blue ray quality files look perfect. No blockiness, no hesitation, no problems. And they start IMMEDIATELY.

All you need do is create a share on the server pc, then create a shortcut to it on the asus. (EASY) And off you go. Some files will not easily fastforward/rewind, and that mostly relates to how well the original creator encoded the file. In other words, if they used lousy/cheap software to rip a file, it may not fastforward smoothly, but it will still play.

The other con is no... Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars great idea, small issues, October 21, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase( What's this?)
This review is from: ASUS O!Play - TV HD Media Player (Black) (Electronics)
Update Nov/11/09: I installed the latest firmware and this solved several of the issues I had. I edited a few things I have previously written.

I bought this box based on many positive reviews here. My experiences differ a little though.

Yes this unit plays pretty much anything. That's a big plus. The interface and setup is also very simple and easy. You really don't need a manual for it. The image quality is great, both SD and HD movies look excellent. It even playes ISO files of DVDs or bluray disks! That's a very nice feature as you can dump the whole DVD to disk and get all menus and features. It does not play ISO files from the old HD-DVD disks. That's a bummer as this would give us access to very inexpensive HD movies. There is a fix provided you have a HD-DVD drive. A software called Clown_BD (google it) will create a .ts file from your HD-DVD disk in 20 min. These will play fine on the O!Play.

Even though it's supposed to play ISO images from... Read more
